About GuyWriters Magazine
Monday, 22 June 2009
GuyWriters Magazine is the online literary magazine for GuyWriters, a network of gay writers in San Francisco. We appear quarterly, featuring poetry, prose, drama, and comedy in diverse media. We accept submissions from writers and artists anywhere.
Submission Guidelines
Attention! As noted in the last edition (Vol. 1, No. 3), there is no planned new edition at this time.
We accept writing that is gay and a pleasure to read or listen to. This is an intentionally broad definition to maintain the editor’s sanity. Here are a few ideas:
- we publish online, with a possible printable version for readers to take with them. Write your first paragraph to hook them, or they’ll start clicking around.
- send us your best revision. There’s nothing like misspellings to make us think we’ll have to spend a lot of time proofreading, and we don’t have that time. Suggestion: find a writers group (such as GuyWriters) and a reliable, likable, friendly reader to encourage you to revise. We try to be real editors and flag inconsistencies, shifts in point of view, unchecked facts, and narrators busting in.
- we’ll take pictures (drawings, photos,…) too. Make sure you own the copyright and that you have appropriate permission and attribution if you took someone’s photo.
- we just don’t want to have to put a “enter only if you are 18″ page, so don’t bother sending adult stuff (this is mostly about pictures). There are plenty of other sites that will take it. Since we’re on the subject of what we don’t take, please don’t try to transform our nice literary magazine into a megaphone for your agenda.
- we don’t pretend to take only unpublished work, since we don’t pay anyway. We will attribute the copyright to you, and publish your bio which can refer readers to your published material. For example, if you wrote a novel, we’ll be happy to publish an excerpt and all the information to buy the book.
- we’ll try to let you know within four weeks whether or not we accept your piece.
Send submissions by e-mail to submissions (at) guywritersmagazine.org ; we don’t have the latest and greatest software, so given the option keep it to .doc or .rtf
In the event we decide to publish your piece, we’ll request a bio, which can be as shorts as the address of your web site. We recommend less than 100 words simply because it’s unlikely to be poetic.
Sending You Elsewhere?
We don’t want to lose you, but it’s healthy to look around for other publications that could take your work. Velvet Mafia comes to mind. Do come back here, we love you.
Disclaimer: I wrote “we” everywhere while everybody knows it’s just me and my own views. GuyWriters is not responsible for my editorial choices, and its use of my first name is purely coincidental, not even licensed… Guy Tiphane, ed.
